Book Recommendation: Star Lost by Amy Marie Ayers

Today’s Book Recommendation/Review is “Star Lost” Book 1 of The Luccee Winterscott Series by Amy Marie Ayers. This book takes place in the Earth’s future where corporations have taken control using AI and our memories and/or original thoughts are under attack, while shallow socializing is what thrives. Yikes!

To be honest this hit way too close to home, with how our thoughts are scrutinized under a microscope through earpieces then later chips in your head and anyone who doesn’t follow the social norm is villainized. Thinking for yourself is a huge infraction and reading books/writing is illegal (gasp – ok for real this part really made me sad!). Friendships are more about meeting a social requirement to make the corporation FF happy than true connection (again this hits so close to home!). Luccee finds herself not fitting in because she isn’t considered social and while she is considered awkwardly social, I understood it more than she was seeking authentic relationships instead of the forced interactions imposed on them. Because of this, Luccee is a target as someone to be fixed or excommunicated if she doesn’t comply. Luccee’s battling feelings of frustration, confusion, and wondering ‘what’s wrong with me’ was beautifully written and a big connecting point to her character.

If you’re looking for a very realistic dystopian novel, this is it. There is a lot of backstory and jumping between 2 different times, but I didn’t mind it and was able to easily follow along. I loved the diary and getting backstory from that too. I am excited to read the next book, Star Sick, which seems to allude to visiting other planets! 🪐 😃
