Today’s book review and recommendation is the Legend series by Marie Lu. This three book series is set in a dystopian future where the United States has split apart and the western part of the United States is now the Republic that is a nation always at war with its neighbors. One of the Republic’s residents June is a prodigy who is born into an elite family. She has an easy life until one day her brother is unexpectedly murdered and Day, a boy born into the complete opposite world of June, is the main suspect. Day doesn’t have an easy life. He is worried about helping care for his brother in a world where if you are born on the wrong side of the tracks, you can’t afford to mess up. But Day has other plans, including rebelling against the Republic in disguise. June is devastated by the death of her brother and vows for vengeance as she goes after the number one suspect, Day. As June and Day play cat and mouse Day shows June the other side of her seemingly perfect world. But as they continue to uncover the truth of what’s really going on they are both put in danger as they discover the secrets of their country that it is fighting to keep under wraps, at all costs.
I absolutely loved this series and remember devouring the first book. The world was realistic (sometimes too realistic especially in this day and age!) and it had all the dystopian vibes I love. I was sad when it finished! June’s character is this top level, kick butt woman who is loyal to her brother. I grieved for their relationship when he died and June’s reaction was felt through the pages. Day was a fun character to read. He was witty and the perfect contrast to June. If you’re into Dystopian worlds this is your kind of read! Especially the enemies to lovers trope.
