Book Review: Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

Today’s book recommendation/review is the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. Beatrice “Tris” Prior lives in a dystopian Chicago world where society is divided into 5 factions. Each faction exhibits a certain type of virtue: Candor (honest), Abnegation (selfless), Dauntless (brave), Amity (peaceful), Erudite (intelligent). On a specific day each year all 16 yr olds must select which faction they will be in for the rest of their lives.

Tris has a hard choice to make. She loves her family but doesn’t feel she can stay in Abnegation for the rest of her life. After she makes her choice, she finds out that she has a gift. Well, a gift that she finds is actually a curse. This sends her on a perilous journey where she must do whatever she can to hide her secret, save her family, all while her world falls apart as she tries to save their future.

Divergent is the perfect ya dystopian book series. The world building is amazing, as someone who grew up visiting Chicago often, it was very realistic. The ideas presented with the different factions was so unique and I loved the plot and really felt for Tris and the inner conflict she goes through. I may or may not have cried at certain parts! I was not as big of a fan of the third book or the prequel “Four”. I felt the plot was wonky in “Allegiant” and was hard to follow, including the climatic ending. “Four” just felt like a regurgitation of what we knew about Tobias and his history. Overall, I still enjoyed the series and recommend!
